Is a contractor responsible for concrete work ?

New patio was put in 6 Months ago(June 08) it cracked this winter 1/20/09 is he liable for repair

Mark Your Questions About Concrete Crack Repair Contractors

Admin answers:

It depends upon the contract wording. Nearly every concrete slab will crack at some point and there is a big difference between a hairline crack, (enevitable), and a slab that is opening up due to faulty ground preparation. If it is a hairline crack, 99.9% of contractors are simply going to say that it’s the nature of the product and they are totally correct. Look at a lot of concrete slabs and you’ll see what I mean.

Why does my sump pump pit smell?

I have a sump pump pit in my basement. There is a large inlet into the pit that seems to be coming from the outside area, probably drain tile? Someone installed a car port and new concrete in back of the house and put in 2 drains that run into the pump. The pump pumps into a pipe upward that goes directly into the main drain sewer pipe. There is a trap in this pipe. There is allways a stinky smell coming from the pit. It appears the smell comes from the big inlet from the outside. When the pump evacuates the pit, the inlet whole is exposed above the water level. Is this a problem? Should that water be over the inlet hole? Any help please.

basement walls?

Hi there, I’m going to insulate my basement walls, is it ok to put up rigid foam (1/2 ” ) against block wall to control moisture, then 2×4 framing, then firberglass between framing. Or is this over kill. Thanks for input.
I asked this other question before about a steel beam, If I welded two steel 1/4″ plates on the sides of 6″ H beam would it increase the strength of it. I want to take down a supporting wall in my basement. There is only one floor above it and the span is 17′. I was told I should use an 8″ beam, but I would like more head room. And yes 2″s would make a huge dfference. What’s your thoughts. I’m willing to take a chance. Thanks.
